Easter Week Chia

In parts of Mexico and Central America, chia appears in traditional Easter Week celebrations. 
In 2024 Viernes de Dolores, the Friday of Sorrows, falls on March 22, marking the beginning of Easter Week, or Holy Week. The day commemorates the seven sorrows of the mother of Christ. Temporary altars and displays are set up in the streets, usually featuring an image or statue of Nuestra Señora de los Dolores surrounded by flowers, and a variety of traditional items: candles, oranges, bowls of colored water, corn seedlings, and chia sprouts. According to this article, the chia seeds are blessed at the beginning of Lent.

Sprouted sage seeds blessed on February 2, have also long been associated with the celebration of Our Lady of Sorrows. Growing greens remind the viewer of the resurrection and renewal of life. These sprouting sage seeds are also known as chia, the seeds traditionally sprouted in the grooves of clay animals, figures and pots.

Ron Mader of Planeta has documented this use of chia pets in Oaxaca.

Day 9 with Chia Obama. He's become an outdoor Chia this cycle, has bit of a funky smell.

 

Chia Pet FAIL

Elmer Flax

Annette, from the Pure Gardener in Geneva, Ill, posted this photo:

 

It's "Elmer," an antique chia head from the World War II era.

Since she didn't have any chia seeds, Annette tried using golden flax seeds. Then she put Elmer under a "cloche" to keep the humidity high.

Morton Pottery in Morton, Illinois made these unique bisque heads  in several varieties. Grass seeds were provided to sprinkle on the grooved surface of the pot. Elmer is one of a series of military grass growing heads were only made from 1941 to 1945. They are fairly rare and are often expensive.

Danielle of Something Blue Studio (2009) says, "If you happen to have a kiln, making your own chia is easy!  We used low fire white talc clay…hand-built two pinch pots and sealed them together for the body…used a wire tool to scrape away some grooves for the seeds…added a few animal parts…added underglazes and then used a clear glaze only on the parts where the seeds shouldn’t grow."

Don't miss the horseplay in the bloopers at the end. Otherwise it's pretty lame.

 

Chia seeds may be hazardous to your plumbing!!

 Blogger Kevin Gannon has been trying to grow a Chia Obama without much success.

But in the process, he's accidentally grown chia seeds in a few other places, for example, in this margarita glass, and,  UNFORTUNATELY, in the drain of his sink!!

I've done the same thing. And I almost had to call the plumber!! Draino to the rescue!!

So be sure to clean up after your chia planting experiments.

Don't pour your chia gel down the drain.

Flush it, instead!!

The pottery figure is quite primitive as were the original pottery made in Oaxaca, Mexico.

And did you notice? There's no Ch-ch-ch-Chia Jingle!

In December 2007, the Smithsonian Magazine carried an article about Chia Pets on page 32. It's published on the web, here and features an interview with Mr. Joseph Pedott who founded the Chia Pet company and who created the idea for the "Ch-ch-ch-chia" advertising slogan.
